OK, we’re prepared to go out on a limb here and say that 2020 is going to be the most exciting year for premium and supercars… ever. Bold statement, but let’s look at the key cars arriving this year…

Aston Martin DBX

Aston Martin enters the SUV market with the DBX – which will be powered initially by a 542bhp twin-turbocharged V8 engine (the most powerful V8 in any current production Aston). There are a number of reasons to be excited about this car, starting with the styling. It is by far the most appealing of the new-era premium SUVs – with Aston brand signatures throughout. We suggest you get your order in quick…

Audi e-tron GT

Next up, the Audi e-tron GT. This is a pure-electric sports coupé with a powertrain derived from the Porsche Taycan. Or in other words – it’ll be spectacularly good to drive. The car has a fascinating interior – with a 3D dashboard and integrated touchscreen and optional vegan materials as an alternative to leather.

Land Rover Defender

The Land Rover Defender is back! But this isn’t an ancient and unruly vehicle like its predecessor, the new version will have parking cameras, touchscreen infotainment system, a 14-speaker premium sound system and more. Utilitarian features remain however, including a go-anywhere 4×4 system and no sill around the door – so you can hose out the interior…

Maserati Alfieri

This will be a high performance flagship car from one of the most revered car brands, albeit one that has followed convention with a range of saloons and an SUV in recent years. The long-awaited Maserati Alfieri will have petrol and pure-electric powertrain options and early ‘spy shots’ suggest that it will be a mid-engined supercar – and thus become a powerful rival for McLaren and Ferrari.

BMW M4

Purists will spill their gasoline in horror, but the next BMW M4 (nee M3) will have four-wheel drive. However, like the 4×4 M5, it’ll still do what BMW M-cars do best: powerslide (in a, ahem, controlled environment of course). The revised 3.0-litre straight-six twin-turbo engine will be fitted, and a lightweight CS version is expected to follow.

McLaren 750LT

The standard car is already quite extraordinary, but the eagerly awaited ‘Longtail’ version is expected to be something else. The new, more extreme version of the McLaren 720S is likely to be called the 750LT and will be more powerful and lighter than the standard car – taking it well into Lamborghini Aventador SVJ territory. This will be a limited run car, so get that deposit in fast!

Porsche 911 Turbo [992]

Spotted in disguised form already in testing, the new ‘992’ Porsche 911 Turbo will offer hypercar performance and GT-useability – as it always has done. Amplified to around 600bhp (if not more), the new Turbo will also have an 8-speed gearbox, carbon ceramic brakes and possibly a little further into the lifecycle a mild-hybrid version. A G-suit will be required for launch control: the Turbo is expected to strike 60mph from rest in under 2.7seconds.

Mercedes AMG GT R Black Series

Mercedes won’t be left out of the performance car battle, with an extreme AMG GT R Black Series expected soon. This will be its most hardcore model yet, and effectively be a GT3 race car with numberplates. The V8 twin-turbo engine is expected to push out well over 650bhp – and offer a soundtrack to make the earth quake. Not for the shy.
